According to Samsung, the Xclipse GPU is a very special hybrid graphics processor that sits between a console and a mobile graphics processor. The “Xclipse” is a combination of the “X” for Exynos and the “eclipse”. “We are counting on the new product to have the power of an eclipse to open up exciting new gaming experiences.” Said Samsung.
Based on the high-performance AMD RDNA 2 architecture, Xclipse inherits advanced graphics features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing (RT) and variable rate shading (VRS) that were previously only available on PCs, laptops, and consoles.
Ray tracing is a revolutionary technology that vividly mimics the physical behavior of light in the real world. By calculating the motion and color characteristics of light as it bounces off surfaces, ray tracing generates realistic lighting effects for graphically rendered scenes. To create immersive graphics images and user experiences on mobile devices, Samsung has partnered with AMD to apply hardware-accelerated ray tracing technology to mobile GPUs.
Variable-rate shading is a technology that optimizes the GPU workload, allowing developers to use lower shading rates in areas that don’t affect the overall quality, thus giving the GPU more room to work on the areas that matter most to gamers and increasing frame rates for smoother gameplay.
In addition, the Xclipse GPU is equipped with a variety of technologies, such as the Advanced Multi-IP Governor (AMIGO), which improves overall performance and efficiency.
The AMD RDNA 2 graphics architecture brings power-efficient, advanced graphics solutions to PCs, laptops, gaming consoles, cars and now extends to smartphones. Samsung’s Xclipse GPU is the first result of the multi-generation AMD RDNA graphics initiative in the Exynos SoC, and we can’t wait to give mobile customers a great gaming experience based on our technology partnership.
said David Wang, senior vice president of AMD’s Radeon Technology Group.
The Exynos 2200 is one of the latest Arm’s latest Armv9 CPU cores integrated into the market, offering significant security and performance improvements over Armv8. Both are becoming increasingly important in today’s mobile communications devices.
The Exynos 2200’s octa-core CPU is designed in a tri-cluster architecture, consisting of one powerful Arm Cortex-X2 flagship core, three large Cortex-A710 cores with balanced performance and efficiency, and four small energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores.
With an upgraded NPU, the Exynos 2200 delivers more powerful on-device AI capabilities. Compared to its predecessor, the NPU offers double the performance for more parallel computation and enhanced AI performance. In addition to the power-efficient INT8 (8-bit integer) and INT16, the NPU now offers higher precision with FP16 (16-bit floating point) support.
In addition, the Exynos 2200 integrates a high-speed 3GPP Release 16 5G modem with support for sub-6GHz and millimeter wave bands. With E-UTRAN New Radio-Dual Connection (EN-DC), it can utilize both 4G LTE and 5G NR signals and boost the speed up to 10Gbps.
At the security level, the Exynos 2200 is equipped with an integrated secure element (iSE) for storing private encryption keys and functions as a Root of Trust (RoT). In addition, the inline encryption hardware for UFS (Universal Flash Storage) and DRAM is enhanced to enable user data encryption to be shared securely only within the secure domain.
The Exynos 2200’s ISP architecture has been redesigned to support a new image sensor that enables ultra-high resolution of up to 200 megapixels. At 30 frames per second (fps), the ISP supports up to 108MP in single-shot mode and 64MP+36MP in dual shot mode. It can also connect up to 7 independent image sensors and can support 4 shots running simultaneously, enabling advanced multi-shot capabilities. For video recording, the ISP supports resolutions up to 4K HDR (or 8K).
Together with the NPU, the ISP leverages advanced content-aware AI cameras for finer and more realistic results. When taking photos, the machine learning-based AI camera recognizes multiple objects, environments, and faces in a scene, and then applies appropriate settings for color, white balance, exposure, dynamic range, and more to produce professional-grade quality images.
The Exynos 2200 is currently in mass production and we say it performing on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 Series.
