According to Samsung’s official news, Samsung starts the shipping industry’s first third-gen 10nm-class (1z) EUV-based 16Gb LPDDR5 DRAM. Following DRAM, new Pyeongtaek Line 2 to produce next-gen V-NAND and foundry solutions. The new 16Gb LPDDR5 is based on Samsung’s third-generation 10nm class (1z) process, which has the highest mobile memory performance and maximum capacity.

“The 1z-based 16Gb LPDDR5 raises the industry to a new threshold, overcoming a major development hurdle for DRAM expansion at advanced nodes,” said Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of DRAM products and technology at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our lineup of premium DRAM products and exceed the needs of our customers as we lead the entire memory market.”

At more than 128,900 square meters (more than 1.3 million square feet), equivalent to about 16 football fields, Samsung’s Pyeongtaek Line 2 is the largest semiconductor production line ever built. Samsung says the new Pyeongtaek line will become a major manufacturing center for the industry’s most advanced semiconductor technologies, providing state-of-the-art DRAM, then next-generation V-NAND and foundry solutions, while strengthening the company’s leadership position in the Industry 4.0 era.

Based on today’s most advanced (1z) process node, Samsung’s new 16Gb LPDDR5 is the first memory to be mass-produced with EUV technology, providing the highest speed and capacity in mobile DRAM.

At 6400 megabits per second (Mb/s), the new LPDDR5 is about 16 percent faster than the 12Gb LPDDR5 (5500Mb/s) found in most flagship mobile devices today. When packaged in a 16GB package, LPDDR5 can transfer approximately 10 5GB-Size Full HD movies, or 51.2GB of data, in less than a second.

Thanks to the first commercially available 1z process, LPDDR5 packages are 30 percent thinner than the previous generation, enabling 5G and multi-camera smartphones and foldable devices to pack more functionality into a slim design. 16Gb LPDDR5 requires only eight chips to build a 16GB package, compared to 12 chips required for its 1y-based predecessor chips (eight 12Gb chips and four 8Gb chips) to deliver the same capacity.

Samsung plans to further strengthen its position in the flagship mobile device market throughout 2021 by delivering the first 1z-based 16GB LPDDR5 package to smartphone makers worldwide, and will also extend the use of LPDDR5 products to automotive applications.
