The Samsung ISOCELL GN1, a new 50-megapixel (MP) image sensor with 1.2μm of large pixels. Measuring 1/1.3 inch, the ISOCELL GN1 is Samsung’s first image sensor to offer both dual-pixel and Tetracell technology. With its relatively large pixel size, the GN1 takes the image sensor to a new level of performance, combining high sensitivity for stellar low-light photos with DSLR-grade autofocus speed, and optimized for a more dynamic photographic experience. The Samsung ISOCELL GN1 has been in mass production since May.

Some smartphone manufacturers focus on extremely fine images with ultra-high resolution, while some choose larger pixels for brighter results in low light conditions. The new Samsung ISOCELL GN1 meets these needs once and for all with Dual Pixel and Tetracell technology.

Samsung ISOCELL GN1 supports 100-megapixel phase detection autofocus (PDAF) for best-in-class autofocus. Samsung’s two-pixel technology places two photodiodes side by side in a single-pixel that can receive light from different angles for phase detection.

With all the active pixels of the sensor acting as an autofocus agent, the GN1 can instantly detect and focus on the desired stationary or moving object from every corner, even in low light conditions. When an image is captured, a single-pixel output is created by merging the outputs of two photodiodes within a pixel. Samsung also offers a software algorithm that takes light information from each photodiode to produce images with a resolution comparable to 100MP.

For the ultimate low light photography, the GN1 uses Tetracell technology, a pixel merging technique that improves the ability of pixels to capture and process more light. By combining four-pixel signals into one, Tetracell doubled the pixel size of the image sensor to 2.4μm and quadrupled the light sensitivity to take brighter 12.5MP photos. With improved sensitivity and a powerful autofocus solution, the GN1 can even focus quickly on objects in extreme low light conditions, resulting in brighter, sharper results.

In addition to dual-pixel and Tetracell technology, the GN1 features Smart-ISO, which intelligently selects the best ISO, real-time HDR (which captures scenes with multiple exposures simultaneously), and gyroscope-based Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) to capture crisp images and video that maintain quality even in motion. For excellent video quality, the image sensor supports 8K/30 frames (fps) for recorded video.
