Android 14 Introduces Flash Notifications
In the bustling world of smartphones and constant connectivity, finding the balance between staying informed and respecting the peace of those around us can be a delicate task. Android users have often turned to the trusty silent mode to keep their notifications discreet, but even this approach has its drawbacks. Recognizing this, Google is taking a step forward in user experience with the introduction of Flash Notifications in the beta version of Android 14.
In a bid to provide a more considerate way of alerting users, Android 14’s new feature tackles the issue head-on. Users will now have the option to receive notifications or alarms through flashes of light, adding a layer of personalization to their alert preferences.

To access this feature, users can navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Flash Alerts. Here, they’re presented with two distinct options: Camera Flash and Screen Flash. The Camera Flash option causes the rear camera flash to blink twice upon receiving a notification. This is particularly useful when the phone is locked or face down, ensuring that users are alerted even when their device isn’t in their line of sight.

The Screen Flash option, on the other hand, provides a vibrant and eye-catching approach. When activated, the screen will flash twice with a yellow hue. This mode is designed for instances where the phone is placed face up, ensuring that the user is notified even without the need to pick up their device. The beauty of this feature lies in its personalization capabilities. Users can choose from a range of 12 colors for the screen flash, allowing them to tailor the experience to their preferences.
To further assist users in customizing their experience, Google has included a preview button at the bottom left of the settings menu. This allows users to view the effect of their chosen settings before finalizing them, ensuring that the alert style aligns with their requirements.
It’s worth noting that this innovative feature is currently exclusive to users who have installed the Android 14 beta version. However, Google’s plan to roll out the official version of Android 14 in the near future means that the benefits of Flash Notifications will soon be available to a wider audience.
In a world where smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, Android 14’s Flash Notifications pave the way for a more personalized and considerate notification system. With the ability to choose between camera flashes and screen flashes, along with a spectrum of colors to pick from, users can now stay informed without disturbing those around them.
