Samsung XR Headset Prototype Surfaces
In a move that highlights the fierce competition in the XR (Extended Reality) market, Samsung has decided to postpone the launch of its highly anticipated XR headset. Originally slated for a February 2024 release, the tech giant’s decision comes in response to the pressure exerted by Apple’s Vision Pro. The postponement will allow Samsung to reevaluate the specifications and design of the XR headset, with a projected delay of 3-6 months.
Leaked information about the Samsung XR HMD prototype provides insight into the company’s strategic response to Apple’s advances. The prototype features cutting-edge technology, including the Exynos 2200 SoC integrated with AMD RDNA2 technology. This powerful fusion is paired with a Micro-OLED screen, offering users an immersive visual experience. The innovative Pancake folding light path design further underscores Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of XR technology.

Among its notable features, the prototype boasts dual RGB cameras, Inside Out tracking, and support for both human eye and hand tracking inputs. Notably, the XR headset is designed for natural interaction, eliminating the need for handheld controllers. Additionally, the incorporation of a rear-mounted battery enhances user convenience and comfort during extended XR sessions.
The decision to delay the XR headset’s launch comes after Samsung got wind of the specifications of Apple’s Vision Pro. Apple’s offering, set to integrate Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) features, has raised the stakes in the XR market. However, Apple itself faces production hurdles, leading to a significant reduction in its initial sales target for the Vision Pro.
