Redmi Celebrates a Decade of Disruption: Redmi 1 Release

In a small conference room inside Beijing Haidian Jinshan building on July 31, 2013, Xiaomi, a Chinese tech giant, introduced its newest product line, the “Redmi” series. The launch event was modest yet historic, laying the groundwork for a transformative decade ahead.

At this special conference, not even a projector was used, and only a few dozen media members were present. During the event, Lei Jun, along with China Mobile executives, announced the immediate release of the first Redmi phone.
The first Redmi phone, aptly named Redmi 1, carried a price tag of 799 yuan. Despite being budget-friendly, it was not only a dual SIM dual standby phone but also packed impressive features, including the MediaTek 6589T processor with a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, a 4.7-inch retina screen, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 2000mAh battery. This value proposition struck a chord with consumers, driving them to line up in droves to get their hands on this affordable yet powerful device.


The impact of the Redmi phone extended far beyond its competitive specs and wallet-friendly price. It played a pivotal role in reshaping the domestic industrial chain and influencing public perception regarding mid-range smartphones. Before the Redmi’s arrival, the market was plagued with cheap knock-offs, known as “cottage phones.” The Redmi’s success effectively put an end to this trend, as consumers recognized the value of investing in a legitimate product with reputable performance.
Wang Hua, a spokesperson from Xiaomi Group, highlighted the significance of the Redmi’s birth in an article commemorating the anniversary. He recalled the modest beginnings of the brand, where a handful of media members witnessed Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi, and China Mobile executives announcing the release of the Redmi 1 with minimal fanfare, sans even a projector.

Over the past decade, Redmi has evolved rapidly, releasing various iterations that consistently deliver impressive value for money. Each new release continued to challenge the market’s conventions and drive innovation in the mid-range smartphone segment. Moreover, the brand’s global expansion contributed to the popularization of smartphones worldwide.
