Sony's Strategic Choice: Exmor T Sensor Triumphs Over 1-Inch Sensor for Xperia 1 V

Sony Xperia 1 V Sensor Selection

Shanghai recently witnessed the grand spectacle of SonyExpo2023, a highly anticipated brand event hosted by Sony. Themed “Wonderland Comic,” the event showcased Sony’s diverse business ventures in China, encompassing electronics, music, animation, games, film and television, technology research and development, and sustainability. At the pre-show media conference, Sony presented its vision of “inspiring and passionate, creating with dreamers” for its endeavors in China.

One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of Sony’s new flagship phone, the Xperia 1 V (Sony Xperia 1 Mark 5). During interviews with Sony executives and product developers, the media inquired about the absence of a one-inch main camera sensor in the Xperia 1 V, despite its widespread popularity among other Android flagship devices in the domestic market.

In response to this question, Mr. Jinpei Sato, Sony’s senior manager of product planning, explained the reasoning behind the decision. He outlined two primary factors influencing the camera sensor selection for the Xperia 1 V. Firstly, the utilization of a one-inch sensor necessitates a larger lens module, making it challenging to control the overall size of the phone’s camera module.

On the other hand, Sony opted to employ the new Exmor T sensor in the Xperia 1 V, which incorporates a double layer of transistor stack technology. This innovative approach enhances photographic capabilities, particularly in low-light conditions, providing exceptional results.

Additionally, the Exmor T sensor outperforms traditional smartphone sensors in terms of thermal management, further contributing to superior imaging outcomes. Moreover, the Xperia 1 V features AI super-resolution zoom functionality, which leverages AI technology to enhance and repair telephoto images with subpar performance.

When asked about the imaging algorithm integrated into the Xperia 1 V, Mr. Sato confirmed that it originates from Sony’s esteemed line of micro-single cameras. This algorithm has been refined and optimized specifically for the smartphone experience. By harnessing the expertise accumulated from Sony’s professional imaging products, the Xperia 1 V offers users an unparalleled imaging experience.

During the interviews, attention was also drawn to the disparity in portrait photography experience between Sony phones and mainstream domestic brands. Mr. Sato emphasized Sony’s commitment to achieving a natural sense of imaging in portrait shots. Sony prioritizes capturing natural expressions, including the composition and tone of human skin. The pursuit of authenticity and naturalness guides their approach to portrait photography.

Sony’s dedication to pushing technological boundaries and enhancing user experiences is evident in the Xperia 1 V. By employing exclusive innovations, Sony successfully delivers exceptional imaging capabilities within a compact form factor, without sacrificing the phone’s size or thickness.

The Sony Expo 2023 not only showcased Sony’s prowess across various industries but also highlighted its relentless pursuit of excellence in mobile photography. With the Xperia 1 V, Sony has once again solidified its position as one of the foremost innovators in the smartphone industry.
