Xiaomi Wireless AR Glasses Discovery Edition
Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, unveiled its latest innovation, the Xiaomi Wireless AR Glasses Discovery Edition, at the MWC 2023 World Mobile Congress. The glasses come with a wireless connectivity solution, thanks to Xiaomi’s proprietary high-speed interconnection bus, which connects the glasses to the user’s smartphone. This communication link is low-latency, less than 3ms, and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces for even faster performance.
The display on the Xiaomi Wireless AR glasses is said to be “retina-level,” with a PPD of 58, which is very close to the retina specifications. The human eye cannot detect grain when the PPD is around 60. Xiaomi uses a free-form optical module that consists of a pair of MicroOLED screens and free-form light-guiding prisms. The free-form prisms enable complex light bending and reflection in a limited volume, which results in an extremely low light loss and up to 1200nit brightness to the eyes, providing a clear and bright image.
The Xiaomi Wireless AR Glasses Discovery Edition also features electrochromic lenses that can adapt to different light environments. The blackout mode allows for more immersion when watching movies, while the transparency mode makes the AR experience more vivid by combining reality.
In terms of software, the glasses support Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces, OpenXR, and Microsoft MRTK development frameworks. This allows developers to create a range of applications for the glasses, including gaming, entertainment, and education.
The Xiaomi Wireless AR glasses are designed to be lightweight, weighing only 126g. They use a large number of lightweight materials, including magnesium-lithium alloy, carbon fiber parts, and a self-researched silicon-oxygen negative battery. Xiaomi has also taken into account human head data, ensuring the center of gravity of the glasses, leg spacing, clamping angle, nose rest, and other details provide users with a comfortable wearing experience.
The glasses also come equipped with an innovative self-researched micro gesture interaction, which is more natural and comfortable to use. The micro gesture interaction is supported by a low-power AON camera, which allows for long-time gesture interaction. This feature enables users to perform various functions such as picking an application and opening it, swiping to browse, and returning to the desktop, without the need to use their phone.
In addition to the micro gesture interaction, Xiaomi provides traditional interaction options, including using the phone as a touchpad or remote control for operation.
