ROG Phone 6 Pro Review
1. Introduction
Two years ago, who would have thought that the phone could heat up to such an extent, now take the phone to play games outdoors, absolutely hot, especially in the summer, not mention playing games, tucked in the pocket hanging a music background are hot.
Although the performance growth, heat is inevitable, the temperature is not to this, the specific reason why not to say, but also understand. The more users pay attention to heat dissipation, the more favorable the gaming phone, after all, this category began to focus on heat dissipation very early, advance notice of this situation?

Personally, the author doesn’t think so, when the performance is similar, gaming phones that want higher performance will have to overclock, overclocking will heat, then you have to study how to heat dissipation, and now the front row of the Android phone performance list of AnTuTu Benchmark is almost all gaming phones, is the advantage of the previous research heat dissipation. This wave ah, I think it is a crooked hit belongs.
The long-term past is not the way, a large number of Android flagships can not always be “coy” or have to solve the problem from the root, so this year’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 does not talk about performance, only about power consumption.
If you follow Qualcomm’s official data, say that Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 in the same performance, CPU, and GPU power consumption compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen1 reduced by 30%, and the overall power consumption was reduced by 15%.
Other manufacturers say so, I must be the first to jump out of disbelief, but remember the fear of being dominated by Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 8 Gen1, Qualcomm does have the possibility to significantly reduce power consumption, not heat up, staring at Qualcomm not only users but also a friendly business.
So Qualcomm pays more attention to heat than anyone else, and the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 conversion foundry is an example of this, which has never been done before.
Idle words to this, look at the theme of this time, the first gaming phone equipped with Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 – ROG Phone 6 Series, I believe the focus of attention is the same, in the end, hot or not? Let’s check ROG Phone 6 Pro Review.
2. Performance
First look at the performance, as a gaming phone, performance is the highest priority, ROG Phone 6 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processor, which is also the standard for flagship phones in the second half of the year.
Unlike in the past, this year’s Plus version not only increased the frequency but also replaced the foundry, built by TSMC 4nm process, still 1 + 3 + 4 three clumped architecture, the CPU part by a very large core Cortex X2, large core Cortex A710 and small core Cortex A510, where the maximum CPU main frequency increased to 3.2GHz.
The official data shows that compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen1, the comprehensive performance of Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 has been improved by about 10%, and the GPU frequency has not been announced yet, just that the frequency has been increased by about 10%. You can see that the focus of this upgrade is not on performance, but at most on power consumption.
According to the introduction, Snapdragon 8+ in the same performance, CPU and GPU power consumption are reduced by 30% (compared to Snapdragon 8), the overall power consumption reduced by 15%, if only move the knife CPU and GPU, certainly not reduce so much, Qualcomm should also make adjustments to other modules.
In addition to carrying Snapdragon 8+, ROG Phone 6 Pro is equipped with LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 flash memory, to see how it scores.

After the actual test, ROG Phone 6 Pro’s AnTuTu runtime score of 1118346, easily exceeded 1.1 million, this score exceeded the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 models, where the CPU and GPU scores are doubly improved, the main score item also lies in this, it seems that it is indeed as Qualcomm said, Snapdragon 8+ just improve the frequency, performance once again a small step forward.
3. Appearance
Then look at the shape, usually, the gaming phone needs to have a clear recognition, after all, to meet the gaming positioning, but accidentally become exaggerated, many game phones’ initial shape is indeed more alternative, but ROG is more restrained, not too exaggerated design, just shaped packaging is not necessary, according to Apple’s statement is not at all environmentally friendly, this generation is also.

Most gaming phones choose a non-shaped screen, the benefit is that the screen is not obscured, able to complete the display, the front camera is located on the upper bezel, so the upper bezel is wider than the shaped screen, the screen to body ratio is not good as shaped screen, but this design has been accepted by many users, there is nothing to say.

ROG Phone 6 Pro front with 6.78-inch Samsung E4 AMOLED gaming screen, support 165Hz refresh rate, the default 120Hz for daily use, touch sampling rate upgraded to 720Hz, the full-link touch response time of 23ms, and joined the HDR10 certification, I suspect it should be the same as the previous generation, the screen quality is the same.

The back of the body has a new design style, the continuation of the ROG dazzling personality window while having the ROG logo faith light effect, the overall recognition is certainly there, the camera module looks more fitting back style, full of gaming elements, in addition to ultrasonic shoulder keys are retained, when playing games can be set to the shoulder keys as a specific button on the screen, to achieve multi-finger operation, is also one of the unique advantages of the gaming phones.

ROG Phone 6 Pro retains the side interface of the body, which allows you to play while charging without blocking your hand, and supports the connection of USB-C to HDMI, USB-C headphones, and Cooler Fan 6, powered by the phone or charging cable.
Gaming phone accessories are becoming more and more common, and are currently the most important revenue for many gaming phone manufacturers in addition to the phone business.

4. System
ROG Phone 6 Pro runs Android 12-based ROG UI, since it is a gaming phone, then the software is entirely for gaming services, pick a few interesting keys to talk about.

Since it is ROG UI, the system icons are naturally customized, and the basic functions are there, such as the negative screen, quick tools, and so on, each is similar, so I will not say more.

ROG UI built-in X mode is the game mode, showing the phone’s current status information, such as CPU frequency, temperature, etc., you can manually select the mode to start the game. In addition to the back cover of the dazzling personalized window support customization, including text, special effects, and so on.

After adding X mode to the game, you can individually set its parameters, such as touch accuracy, sensitivity, and hand-following, I feel that the details do not affect much, the key is not to drop frames, no lag, and constant flow is most important.

The battery has several options to help prolong the battery life, such as slow charging, regular charging, or a custom charging cap, which is worth learning from other gaming phones.
5. Gaming
Before testing the game, let’s take a look at the overall heat dissipation configuration of the ROG Phone 6 Pro. ROG 6 Pro uses a new design of matrix liquid cooling architecture 6.0 design, note that it is a new design, and is the biggest update since the launch of the ROG cell phone series upgrade, claiming a significant increase in cooling capacity.
First of all, the internal heat dissipation, the continuation of the previous generation of the mid-CPU, the battery is located on both sides of the CPU, to hold the phone in landscape away from the heat source, another behind said, built-in a large area of graphene, true cavity even temperature plate and other cooling materials, the biggest upgrade lies in the intermediary layer.
ROG 6 Pro between the motherboard and RF board, there is an intermediary layer, that most cell phone designs will retain, which is a closed space, ROG is to find a way to be able to inject a large amount of cooling material (about 3300mg) in the intermediary layer, the main component of the cooling material is boron nitride (BN), thermal conductivity is 200 times that of air, the internal limited space will be used, is indeed a smart way.
Another benefit of the mid-CPU is that it is conducive to accessory cooling, i.e., the cooler fan 6. The processor of a conventional phone is located on the motherboard side, i.e., the rear lens area, but the lens bulge causes the cooling back clip to not fit snugly on the back cover of the phone, resulting in much lower efficiency, while the mid-CPU of the ROG 6 Pro has no such problem at all.
In addition, the side of the body has an ultrasonic shoulder key, and the previous generations of the same design, the author thinks it is easy to accidentally touch, compared to the physical shoulder key of some phones, the ultrasonic shoulder key is more durable, of course, it depends on personal habits.

The Honor of Kings such a MOBA game does not require too much performance, the frame rate is also several gears to choose from, at most the group battle loading effects will have some high load, and the current mid-range processor can run smoothly. ROG 6 Pro is naturally more than enough, basically full-frame running, during the frame is reopened a game, belongs to the normal phenomenon, the temperature is a surprise, almost no heat situation, the highest temperature 36, the average temperature of 34.8, do not feel hot.

Finally, another gaming phone to maintain the “Genshin Impact” 60 frames, ROG 6 Pro plays “Genshin Impact” for about 20 minutes, still maintaining a full frame, on the one hand, Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 released enough performance, on the other hand, is ROG software optimization, load increase, body temperature naturally up, the back cover maximum temperature 45.8, the average temperature of 42.8, belongs to the still acceptable level. At this time, the author already feels the heat, but compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen1, this temperature doesn’t matter.
Therefore, it can be concluded that Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 does have the optimization of power consumption and heat control, compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen1 significantly reduced, and this is in the premise of high performance, Qualcomm is finally back to the game.
6. Battery and Charging
Continuity, ROG 6 Pro is equipped with MMT dual-cell design, with a capacity of 6000mAh, consisting of two 3000mAh (Typ) batteries. The use of MMT battery technology to improve the energy density, not at the two ends of the charge, but from the middle of the charge, reducing the impedance and the temperature of the charging process. The software has a custom charging limit, and slow charging, timer charging, etc., to extend the battery life.
As usual, AnTuTu uses the built-in stress test of AnTuTu test, which is a built-in function of the AnTuTu test to test the stability of the device performance by performing high load calculations, requiring the CPU to perform a lot of calculations, so the power consumption is greater compared to video and daily use scenarios.
Test conditions: No SIM card inserted, device connected to Wi-Fi, positioning turned on, fully charged, screen brightness at maximum, and all background services turned off. Open the AnTuTu stress test, test uninterruptedly, and record the remaining power of the device every 30 minutes.

Under the superpower consumption test, ROG Phone 6 Pro lasted 210 minutes, which can be seen according to the curve, in which there is a frequency reduction operation, which should be to the temperature threshold, the system forced to reduce the frequency to relieve the high temperature, during which the phone performance was limited, but increased the endurance time, for a model with a large battery of 6000mAh, this endurance time is not long, but for a high-performance gaming phone, it’s perfectly adequate.
In addition, if the power remaining 11%, ROG6 Pro still adheres to the 30-minute stress test, the data found that the power is insufficient to automatically open the frequency reduction to limit performance, further extending the battery life.
It should be noted that this result is based on what the CPU has been in the case of full load, taking into account our daily use and bright screen time, so this data should be converted into multiples, resulting in ROG 6 Pro having more than 6 hours of continuous use, note that it is continuous use, not daily screen off, back to the message, etc., as a continuous output of high-performance gaming phones, is already considered good.
Charging, ROG 6 Pro supports 65W wired fast charging, now a hundred watts across the board, 65W seems a little weak, should be a compromise for a large battery, but the charging speed is still acceptable, look at the actual test.

After the actual test, ROG Phone 6 Pro took 40 minutes to charge to 100%, of which 20 minutes to charge 60%, in fact, so large battery capacity, if it is for daily use, no need to fill to meet the daily use.
7. Summary
From the beginning of the generation, it can be seen that ROG wants to make a difference in the game phone, such as better screen quality, software control, etc., due to cost reasons and different user groups, the gaming phone is usually in the camera can save, but ROG since the release of the camera has not been reduced.

This Snapdragon 8+ performance can be said to be a surprise, power consumption is finally down, such as “Honor of Kings” such load is not high hand game, even feel no heat, and the frame rate is stable.
What impressed me about ROG is not the hardware, but the software interaction, the manual adjustment of X mode overclocking, and the high degree of customization of game settings, directly to the user’s choice, which is the way a mature gaming phone should be.
