With ISOCELL HM series sensors, Samsung started utilizing high-pixel (Megapixels), but even with the latest ISOCELL HM3, it has focus problems, and image quality in low light is still not satisfactory. As sensors get bigger, unit pixels also get smaller, this might be the reason for low-quality night photography.

On the other hand, the mobile camera sensor market share leader Sony uses different strategies. Most current and previous popular sensors are 50 megapixels, for example, IMX766. Now Sony is about to release two new series of sensors, belonging to IMX8 and IMX9 series which will be adopted by Vivo and Xiaomi.

According to Digital Chat Station, the technical specifications of Sony’s unreleased CIS, the IMX9 series, and the IMX8 series mega bottom, both have quite luxurious parameters. One of them is an upgraded version of IMX766 and IMX798 – the Sony IMX866, and Vivo X80 Series will be equipped with it.

Sony IMX866 is 50-megapixel RGBW large bottom main camera. The native format is 16:11 and the size of the sensor is 1/1.49-inches. As imaging is necessary to crop into 4:3, the bottom also shrunk to 1/1.56-inches, depending on how Vivo will prompt it.

The interesting thing about IMX866 is that it is a dual-frame sensor, 16:11 format for video is with a sensor size of 1/1.49-inch, while 4:3 crop for a photo is 1/1.56-inch. As IMX766 of Vivo X70 Series’ also cut into 1/1.7-inch. Compared to the RGGB IMX766, this new IMX866 RGBW, the amount of light intake is much larger, so Vivo 80 Series is considered a major upgrade.

Vivo X80 Series is tentatively scheduled for release at the end of this month, which will be the most comprehensive flagship with Dimensity 9000 chipset coupled with an independent ISP.
