Sony Alpha 7 Mark 4 Debuts
After waiting for 4 years, on the evening of October 21, Sony officially released a new full-frame micro single Alpha 7 Mark 4 (model name: ILCE-7M4), which will go on sale in late November 2021 with a suggested retail price of $2499 (approx.).
Officially, the Sony A7M4 takes the outstanding image quality and excellent performance of full-frame cameras to a higher level, redefining the full-frame benchmark created by the A7M3. The camera uses innovative imaging technology, including the newly developed BIONZ XR image processor and advanced autofocus technology based on the flagship micro single Alpha 1, with a newly developed full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor of about 33 megapixels, with rich video performance and a variety of professional features.
Equipped with 759 phase AF detection points, covering 94% of the frame, Sony says the α7M4 has a faster AF-S single autofocus. The autofocus system supports -4EV low-light autofocus and a 30% improvement in real-time eye AF performance, as well as real-time bird’s eye and animal eye focus, and small aperture auto-update at F22, which benefits telephoto lenses with magnification.
In terms of image quality, the Sony A7M4 is equipped with a newly developed approximately 33 megapixel full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor and achieves a wide sensitivity range that can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The A7M4 features a 15-level dynamic range at low sensitivities for a wider range of light and shadow levels, while the Creative Look function allows users to easily adjust the color effects of photos or videos in the camera.
The same BIONZ XR image processor as the flagship micro-single Alpha 1 provides the A7M4 with excellent autofocus performance for AF/AE tracking and calculation at 10 frames/second high-speed continuous shooting, using a focal-plane phase-detection focusing system that covers approximately 94% of the imaging range, achieving excellent real-time tracking performance with 759 phase-detection focus points.
In addition, in addition to supporting human eye tracking during photo and video shooting, the Live Eye Focus function also enables real-time eye-tracking of birds and animals for the first time during both photo and video shooting. Compared to the A7M3, the Alpha 7 Mark 4 also offers approximately 30% better face and human eye detection accuracy.
The Alpha 7 IV inherits some of the features found in Sony’s cinema cameras, such as the S-Cinetone color mode, which is popular with film creators. The camera supports 4K 60p recording in Super 35mm mode and 4K 30p recording in full-frame mode using 7K oversampling for high-quality video shooting.
The camera supports 10-bit color depth and 4:2:2 color sampling for natural color gradation and features XAVC S-I intra-frame encoding for more efficient editing workflow and XAVC HS encoding format with double compression.
The Alpha 7 IV is a dual-image camera with excellent control and reliability, allowing users to easily switch between photo and video shooting. the Alpha 7 Mark 4 features a new two-tier mode dial, with a lower level for selecting photo/video/S&Q modes, and a top-level for adjusting shooting modes such as Auto/P/A/S/M and MR (call out storage), allowing users to quickly select and switch between dedicated settings.
The camera also has a built-in 5-axis stabilization mode for 5.5 levels of stabilization, and the Alpha 7 Mark 4 features an improved, more comfortable, and stable grip that is compatible with CFexpress Type A memory cards for greater storage capacity and faster read/write speeds.
In addition, the approximately 3.68 million dot OLED Quad-VGA viewfinder has 1.6 times the resolution of the A7M3, improving resolution while effectively reducing artifacts for a better live view experience. Thanks to the optimized thermal structure of the camera, users can continuously record 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 format video for over an hour.
