Apple M1 Max GFXBench Scores

Apple released the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, for the first time equipped with Apple’s own M1 Pro and M1 Max SoC, The top-end M1 Max features a 10-core CPU + 32-core GPU design. In terms of graphics, the 32-core GPU consists of 4096 ALUs, which can be equivalently understood as a streaming processor.

Apple M1 Max GFXBench scores are already out, and the comparison looks for AMD RX 6800M and NVIDIA RTX 3080 mobile graphics cards. Since the M1 Max is based on macOS + Metal API and the A/N card is Windows + OpenGL API, the comparison is off-screen scores.

The run scores show that M1 Max performs well, outperforming Nvidia and AMD GPUs in some workloads while staying within a smaller margin in others. Considering that the GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile and Radeon RX 6800M TDPs are 160W and 145W respectively, while the M1 Max tops out at 60W, the power efficiency of the M1 Max is impressive.

M1 Max has a 32-core GPU with 16 execution units per unit. Each execution unit has 8 ALUs, bringing the total number of ALUs in the M1 Max to 4,096. According to Apple, the GPU has a performance of up to 10.4 TFLOPs. Theoretically, the M1 Max’s GPU performance should be comparable to the GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile Edition, which offers 10.91 TFLOPs of performance.

At launch, Apple claimed that the M1 Max’s GPU (60W) is comparable to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile (160W). Apple M1 Max is said to offer the same performance at a lower power level. The company also offers a comparison with the 100W version of the GeForce RTX 3080, where the M1 Max shows a 40% reduction in power consumption. For now, we should take Apple’s numbers with a grain of salt, as the company doesn’t provide any clarification, but simply uses “selected industry-standard benchmarks.”
