Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II
On Wednesday, Sony officially announced a new generation of full-frame telephoto zoom G Master lens Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II with model name SEL70200GM2. It will be available in early November with a suggested retail price of 2799 USD or 2,30,490 INR.
Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II inherits the trademark excellent resolution and soft background bokeh of Sony’s G Master lenses and features quieter, faster, and more accurate autofocus performance.
Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Features:
- Constant F2.8 aperture at 70-200mm focal length
- Quiet, fast, and accurate autofocus and continuous auto-tracking performance
- Excellent video shooting capabilities
- Lightweight design, approximately 29% lighter than the previous generation
- About 4 times faster autofocus and about 30% better autofocus tracking performance when zooming
- Professional maneuverability and reliability
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens delivers crisp, sharp images from the center to the edge of the frame throughout the zoom range, with excellent image quality at the maximum aperture of F2.8.
The lens features two aspherical lenses, including an XA (Super Aspherical) lens with a surface accuracy of 0.01 micron, allowing the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II to effectively control aberration changes during zooming and provide excellent resolution over the entire imaging area.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II also features two ED (low dispersion) glass lenses and two Super ED (ultra-low dispersion) glass lenses to significantly reduce chromatic aberration and prevent artifacts. It suppresses chromatic and spherical aberrations, which are common in telephoto lenses.

The large aperture of F2.8 combined with the newly developed 11-blade circular aperture unit allows the lens to capture images with a soft background bokeh effect. In addition, the advanced optical design, including the XA lens, effectively suppresses the “hexagonal ring” effect, further enhancing the soft bokeh effect.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II also offers excellent close-up performance, with the closest focusing distance of just 0.4m at 70mm and 0.82m at 200mm, and a maximum magnification of 0.3x. In addition, the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II can be easily paired with Sony’s high-performance SEL14TC or SEL20TC rangefinder lenses to extend the focal length of the lens up to 400mm, while maintaining the high image quality of its G Master lenses.
The new lens features four XD linear motors with high speed and thrust for fast and accurate autofocus, about four times faster than the previous generation autofocus, and about 30% better focus tracking ability when zooming. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is capable of high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 30 frames per second when paired with Sony’s flagship micro-single Alpha 1, and offers excellent autofocus tracking performance when using a rangefinder.
The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II features a lightweight design, weighing approximately 1,045 grams (without tripod mount), making it approximately 29% lighter than its predecessor lens. Not only is it lighter, but the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II is better balanced, with the lens’ center of gravity falling directly on top of the tripod mount, so the front of the lens doesn’t feel heavy.
