MediaTek Real-time Ray Tracing Technology on Mobile Devices
Ray tracing is a new generation of game technology, now has been in the PC and host platform to achieve the best performance of popular games, while smartphones do not yet have a complete ray-tracing program.
In January this year, MediaTek released the Dimensity 1200 series 5G processor has said in doing smartphone ray tracking, today they joined Tencent, ARM, and other manufacturers for the first time in the smartphone to achieve rat tracking solutions.

Today MediaTek officially launched the Vulkan extension-based mobile ray tracing SDK solution, and together with Arm and Tencent Games to achieve the first demonstration of real-time ray tracing technology for mobile.
MediaTek said that by building the MediaTek ray tracing SDK and combining it with Tencent Games’ ray tracing rendering pipeline tailored for the mobile platform, it and its industry partners have implemented a Vulkan base ray tracing solution for mobile and combined it with hardware to implement image post-processing solutions such as noise reduction, giving full play to the rendering potential of the GPU on the mobile platform while using new hardware image processing in combination with the Vulkan base.
The new hardware image processing combined with the ray tracing feature enables a leap in image quality with lower power consumption, bringing mobile games to a whole new level of graphic quality.
Previously, at the GDC (Global Game Developers Conference) in summer 2021, MediaTek, together with Arm and Tencent Games, unveiled a demonstration of real-time ray tracing technology for mobile based on Vulkan Ray Tracing technology and showed developers and gamers around the world the stunning graphics generated by mobile ray tracing technology on Mali GPUs.
The collaboration with Arm and Tencent Games allows MediaTek to bring advanced graphics technologies such as ray tracing to the Dimensity series of 5G mobile platforms, said Dr. Youming Cao, Associate Director of MediaTek’s Computing and Artificial Intelligence Technology Group. With MediaTek’s ray tracing SDK solution, game developers can leverage the new technology to upgrade their immersive gaming experience. With tens of millions of smartphones worldwide already using the Dimensity Series 5G mobile platform, MediaTek promise to deliver more vivid and realistic visuals to a wide range of users.
Geraint North, senior director of ecosystem and engineering for Arm’s Terminal Division, said, “The future Mali GPUs will significantly improve the efficiency of ray tracing technology on mobile devices by providing hardware acceleration. Arm’s collaboration with MediaTek and Tencent Games in this area will make it simpler for developers to explore the benefits that ray tracing can bring to mobile games, ensuring that ray tracing content can be ported across cross-platform devices in different ecosystems, further enhancing the user’s gaming experience.”
Nan Wei, Deputy Technical Director of Tencent Game Engine, said, “As humans experience the real world visually, lighting will play an integral role, and real-time ray tracing is rightfully considered the crown jewel of contemporary computer graphics. Through the tremendous efforts of our engineering and art teams, and the strong support from MediaTek and Arm, Tencent Games is about to open a new chapter of high-fidelity mobile gaming with ray tracing technology.”
MediaTek said that it will continue to devote itself to technology research and development in the field of graphics, continuously expand the key technologies of MediaTek HyperEngine game engine, bring end-game level game rendering effects to mobile terminals, provide powerful graphics processing capabilities and solutions for game manufacturers, developers and terminal manufacturers, bring realistic game graphics to the majority of game players, and lead the development trend of mobile graphics through long-term investment in advanced technologies and open cooperation.
