Screen fingerprint recognition technology is already a necessary technology for many cell phones, what other innovations are there in this area? One of Samsung’s latest patents shows that they want to equip the next generation of foldable phones with double-sided screen fingerprint recognition technology, and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 is expected to debut.

On March 31, 2021, Samsung Electronics filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) for a “foldable electronic device capable of detecting fingerprints through at least a portion of the display”. In the patent, Samsung said that because foldable phones are equipped with flexible screens, they are more likely to crease when pressure is applied to the screen, which is not conducive to fingerprint recognition, so existing technology must be adapted to foldable phones as the S Pen is adapted to flexible screens.

The LetsGoDigital has made a concept rendering of the phone based on the patent, and Samsung intends to handle the fingerprint sensor in such a way that it can be used both through the outer screen and when the device is unfolded to the size of a tablet, which is essentially a double-sided fingerprint sensor.

To achieve this, the fingerprint sensor is integrated into the lower-left half of the flexible screen, which can be used in both directions – allowing biometric authentication in both the unfolded and folded positions, with a small printed circuit board (PCB) placed between the sensor and connected to the phone’s motherboard via an additional cable.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 phone’s side-mounted fingerprint sensor is very well done. Technically, there’s no reason for Samsung to switch to an optical/ultrasonic alternative, but it would help set the Galaxy Z Fold 4 differentiate its predecessor and would be the first foldable-screen phone in the world to use the technology.
