Canon today released a dual RF mount fisheye lens, actually part of a new system for EOS VR. Canon RF5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye lens will be available in late December at an Indian market price of 1,79,995 INR.

The Canon Dual Fisheye lens is designed to transform the VR and AR creative process by making VR photography easier, allowing for 180-degree stereoscopic visuals VR shooting while providing the quality of a full-frame mirrorless camera by using the parallax of the left and right fisheye lenses. This design enables a single sensor to receive light from both lenses, simplifying the recording of Virtual Reality (VR) videos via a single camera.

The lens works with the EOS R5, supports 8K recording, and the two fisheye lenses are approximately 60 mm apart, perfectly matching human pupil pitch to provide comfortable parallax for VR and AR. When shooting, it projects two circular images onto the camera’s 45MP sensor, allowing for stereoscopic 180° 3D material or photos for AR or VR applications at resolutions of up to 8192 x 4096.

With Dual-lens Electro Magnetic Diaphragm (EMD), both left and right lenses of the RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye feature EMD that controls exposure electronically. The large aperture of the RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye provides excellent performance even in low-light situations.

In addition, Canon is working on a firmware update for the R5 that includes new features to support the lens and EOS VR systems, such as Canon’s Dual Pixel AF system for MF peaking and manual focus confirmation, and a Magic Window user interface to help users plan delivery to different types of headsets. Canon has also launched its EOS VR Utility and EOS VR Plugin applications, with each application costing $5 per month to subscribe.
