On the evening of May 19, Qualcomm officially announced the official release of its Snapdragon 778G mobile platform, which is built using TSMC’s 6nm process and emphasizes the “ultimate multimedia experience”, officially claiming that it achieves “three all-rounders”.

“Snapdragon 778G was developed to address the growing demand by global OEMs for more platform options in the high-tier. Snapdragon 778G brings many of the latest premium technologies and features into the high-tier to help make next-generation experiences more broadly accessible.”

said Kedar Kondap, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G is designed with an eight-core Kryo 670 architecture, with a maximum main frequency of 2.4GHz and a CPU performance that is claimed to be 40% higher than the previous generation.

AI performance, Snapdragon 778G equipped with the sixth generation of Qualcomm AI engine (Hexagon 770 processor), theoretical arithmetic power up to 12TOPS, the performance is claimed to have doubled compared to the previous generation of products.

The combination of the three ISPs and AI, moreover, can provide intelligent 3A algorithm shooting to optimize image quality, and also support front single camera background bokeh.

As for the imaging system, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G is equipped with the Spectra 570L ISP, an ISP with a three-core design that can take three photos or three videos at the same time, including wide-angle, super wide-angle, and zoom, in addition to supporting the shooting of 4K HDR10+ videos. It supports a single camera up to 192 megapixels, a dual camera up to 36 megapixels + 22 megapixels, triple camera up to 22 megapixels.

In terms of baseband, the Snapdragon 778G integrates Snapdragon X53 5G baseband, support for millimeter-wave (400MHz bandwidth/2×2 MIMO), Sub-6GHz band (100MHz bandwidth/4×4 MIMO), the peak download speed of 3.7Gbps, support for dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), global 5G multi-card, 5G NR.

For Wi-Fi networks, the Snapdragon 778G supports, FastConnect 6700 Mobile Connectivity System supports Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, peak download fragmentation of 2.9Gbps, 4K QAM support, 160MHz channel in 5GHz/6GHz band, plus Bluetooth 5.2.

On the software side, the Snapdragon 778G supports some of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including Variable Resolution Rendering (VRS) and Qualcomm Game Quick Touch.

The VRS enables developers to specify and group pixels to be shaded in different game scenarios to reduce the GPU workload, thereby reducing power consumption while maintaining the highest visual fidelity of the screen. Game Quick Touch, on the other hand, improves touch response speed by 20%, reducing touch latency while delivering a professional-grade gaming experience.

Other features include 100W QC5 fast charging, BeiDou navigation, USB 3.1, 3360×1600 screen resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and Snapdragon Sound audio technology suite.

Snapdragon 778G equipped with commercial devices is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2021, including Honor, iQOO, Motorola, OPPO, Realme, and Xiaomi have been confirmed to launch related models. Combined with the previous rumors, the upcoming Honor 50 series is likely to be the first model of Snapdragon 778G.
