The Asus Zenfone 8 measures 148×68.5×8.9 mm and weighs 169 grams. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 888 chip and runs Android 11-based ZenUI 8. The flagship has a 5.9-inch AMOLED display (Samsung E4) with 1080p resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. The phone has Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance becomes the first ASUS phone to have an IP rating.

The screen has a 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate, is HDR10+ certified, covers 112% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with good color calibration, has a peak brightness of 1,100 nits, and the fingerprint reader is built into the display. The back of the camera has a dual camera with a 64MP sensor, the same IMX686 used in the Zenfone 7 generation, with 0.8-micron pixels and a Quad Bayer filter, as well as dual pixel autofocus.

The camera has optical stabilization (OIS) and can record 8K video at 24fps (with EIS enabled). It also supports 4K/60fps, 1080p/60fps video recording, and the triple microphone system has OZO audio zoom and noise reduction technology.

The second camera on the back is based on a 12MP IMX363 sensor (1/2.55″) with 1.4μm pixel dual pixel autofocus and its lens (with a focal length of 14.3mm) can focus at a distance of 4cm for taking macro photos. The front selfie camera uses the new 12-megapixel IMX663 sensor (1/2.93-inch, 1.22μm), which also has dual-pixel autofocus. Both the ultra-wide-angle and selfie cameras can record 4K video (60fps and 30fps respectively).

ASUS has equipped the little Zenfone 8 with some great audio hardware, with a 3.5mm audio jack, two linear speakers with dual Cirrus Logic mono amplifiers (CS35L45), and support for Dirac HD sound. There is also an FM radio receiver, but it is disabled in the EU.

The USB-C port supports 30W HyperCharge for fast and safe charging of the 4000mAh battery (Quick Charge 4.0 and USB Power Delivery PPS are also supported). However, this port only supports USB 2.0 standard. The phone supports 5G networks with multiple bands. The latest Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 (with aptX adaption) are supported. The phone has a dual nano-SIM card slot, but no microSD slot.

Asus Zenfone 8 Flip

The previous generation ZenFone flagship comparison, ZenFone 8 Flip still uses the flip camera scheme, through this scheme, the rear camera can be transformed into the front, so that the Asus ZenFone 8 Flip does not need to be equipped with an additional front camera, to achieve a true full-screen form without bangs, without digging holes.

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip comes with a flip camera, which is a triple camera that adds a 3x telephoto lens to this smaller phone. Of course, there’s no front-facing camera, and the key selling points of the device are the flawless true full-screen and the ability to take selfie photos and videos with both the main camera and the ultra-wide camera.

The Flip is also powered by a Snapdragon 888 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The phone has a 3-in-1 card slot with a dedicated MicroSD location. The rest of the configuration is the same as the Zenfone 7, with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with the same 1080p+ resolution (20:9), which also supports a 90Hz refresh rate (200Hz touch sampling rate) and is covered with Gorilla Glass 6.

The screen is not as bright as the Zenfone 8’s display (up to 700 nits) but has the same HDR10+ certification and excellent color rendering. The Zenfone 8 Flip’s fingerprint reader has been moved from the side to below the display. The phone also has a smart key that can trigger three custom actions with a single, two, or long-press.

The triple cameras are the same, with a 64MP IMX686 primary sensor (no OIS support), as is the 12MP IMX363 sensor in the ultra-wide angle module, and the 8MP OmniVision sensor in the telephoto camera, offering 3x optical zoom (80mm focal length) and up to 12 digital zooms. The main camera can record 8K video at 30 fps and 4K video at 60 fps, the ultra-wide-angle camera is up to 4K/60fps, while the telephoto module offers only basic 1080p/30fps recording, and the camera is protected by Gorilla Glass.

The 5000 mAh battery with 30W HyperCharge is also unchanged (QC 4.0 and USB-PD support). Wireless connectivity benefits from a new chipset that supports Wi-Fi 6E. For audio, aptX adaptive is supported (also available in the 7 series). The Flip does not support a 3.5mm headphone jack but has stereo speakers with a dedicated NXP mono amplifier (TFA9874) and Hi-Res Audio certification. The speakers are tuned by Dirac Research, just like the speakers on the ROG phones. Asus Zenfone 8 Flip price starting from 799 euros.
