Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to Pack Powerful New SoC and Galaxy S22 Miss ToF Sensor
According to the tipster Ice Universe, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 processor information is top secret, which means Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will not use Exynos 2100 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. According to this speculation, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may use Qualcomm’s new generation flagship processor Snapdragon 888 Plus, or Exynos 9925, the latter expected to integrate AMD GPU.
Reports say Samsung is expected to release a new GPU in June, and the Exynos chip with integrated AMD GPU will be named Exynos 9925, with the performance expected to outperform Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888’s Adreno 660. As usual, this year we will also see the Snapdragon 888 Plus version, and the CPU performance will be more powerful than the Snapdragon 888.
Qualcomm will mass-produce the Plus version of the commercial Snapdragon 8 series flagship processor in the second half of the year, and as Galaxy Z Fold 2 released last year using Snapdragon 865 Plus flagship processor, Galaxy Z Fold 3 expected to use Snapdragon 888 Plus, and in some market will bring it with Exynos 9925 SoC. Furthermore, several reports also indicated that Galaxy Z Fold 3 features under-screen camera technology.
According to another report from Korean media ETNEWS, the report says that a person familiar with the matter said that consumers didn’t respond poorly to the camera array without the ToF unit, so the company decided not to have the sensor on the Galaxy S22. Samsung seems to think its flagship phone doesn’t need a ToF unit because it doesn’t currently serve a meaningful purpose. The sensor may return when augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications mature.
The ToF sensor will calculate the time it takes for the reflected beam to bounce back to the sensor, which helps with 3D mapping of portrait patterns and facial recognition. The technology was available in the Galaxy S10 5G, Note10+, and last year’s S20 series, but was dropped from the Note 20 and Galaxy S21 series, and now it doesn’t look like it’s coming back in the Galaxy S22.
Last year, the Samsung introduced an ISOCELL Vizion 33D ToF sensor. It has a 4-touch demodulation system for accurate depth measurement of fast-moving objects, and Samsung also says it can accurately map a user’s face in dimly lit environments. For now, the company reportedly plans to sell it to other smartphone makers.
Samsung has also recently partnered with Japanese camera company Olympus, and it remains to be seen if the S22 will have an Olympus-branded camera array which was unveiled in recent S22 Ultra renderings.
