Qualcomm today announced Snapdragon X65 5G modem and RF system “Snapdragon X65” – the 4th generation 5G modem-to-antenna solution. It is the world’s first modem and RF system to support 10Gbps 5G rates and the first 3GPP Release 16 compliant specification and is currently sampling to device manufacturers, with commercial devices using this new system expected in 2021. This system is divided into four parts: the core is the Snapdragon X65 Modem chip, followed by the RF transceiver chip, RFFE RF front-end, and millimeter-wave antenna module.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 Specifications

Snapdragon X65 is Qualcomm’s biggest leap forward in 5G solutions. The system is designed to support the fastest 5G transmission speeds on the market today with fiber-optic-like wireless performance and to leverage the available spectrum for the ultimate in network flexibility, capacity, and coverage. In addition to Snapdragon X65, Qualcomm Technologies also introduced Snapdragon X62 5G Modem and RF System “Snapdragon X62”, a modem-to-antenna solution optimized for the mainstream mobile broadband application market.

Snapdragon X65 and X62 5G

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 5G modem and RF system innovation include:

  • Scalable architecture to support enhancements, scaling, and customization across 5G segments; and software updates to support upcoming new features, functionality, and rapid deployment of new 3GPP Release 16 features. In particular, as 5G expands into new verticals such as computing, industrial IoT, and fixed wireless access, this scalable architecture enables future-proof solutions based on Snapdragon X65 to support the adoption of new features, extend end-use cycles and help reduce the total cost of ownership.
  • The 4th generation Qualcomm QTM545 millimeter wave antenna module, designed to extend mobile millimeter-wave network coverage and improve energy efficiency. The Qualcomm QTM545 millimeter wave antenna module with the new Snapdragon X65 modem and RF system supports higher transmit power than its predecessor and all global millimeter wave bands, including the new n259 (41GHz) band while maintaining the same compact footprint as its predecessor.
  • The world’s first AI antenna tuning technology is the first step in bringing the company’s more than a decade of groundbreaking AI research and development to mobile RF systems, bringing significant improvements to cellular technology performance and energy efficiency. For example, AI enables a 30% improvement in hand-held terminal detection accuracy compared to previous generation technology. This improvement leads to enhanced antenna tuning, resulting in higher data transmission speeds, improved coverage, and longer battery life.
  • Next-generation power tracking solutions are smaller, more efficient, and have a higher performance – providing superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to common power tracking technologies.
  • The most comprehensive spectrum aggregation, covering all major 5G bands and combinations thereof, including millimeter-wave and Sub-6GHz bands, FDD and TDD, bringing operators the ultimate flexibility by using fragmented 5G spectrum assets.
  • Qualcomm 5G PowerSave 2.0, based on new power-saving technologies defined in 3GPP Release 16, such as the Connected-Mode Wake-Up Signal.
  • Qualcomm Smart Transmit 2.0, a unique system-level technology licensed by Qualcomm Technologies for use with Snapdragon X65 modems and RF systems that brings higher upload rates and wider sub-6 GHz bands by leveraging system awareness from modem to antenna while consistently meeting RF transmit requirements. network coverage.

These and many other performance enhancements to the Snapdragon X65 modem and RF system are designed to deliver a superior 5G experience through faster cellular communication, wider network coverage, and all-day battery life. Snapdragon X65 will support a new generation of top-of-the-line smartphones and the expansion of 5G to segments such as PCs, mobile hotspots, industrial IoT, fixed wireless access, and 5G enterprise private networks.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 Features

Qualcomm Technologies is also building on the Snapdragon X65 with a widely available product, the Snapdragon X62 5G modem, and the RF system. The Snapdragon X62 is a 5G modem-to-antenna solution for mobile broadband applications, supporting gigabit download speeds.

Qualcomm's 5G modems

The tight integration of modem and RF and advanced modem and RF technologies will help device manufacturers deliver superior data rates, network coverage, call quality, and all-day battery life. The gigabits of 5G delivered by the Snapdragon X65 5G modem and RF system enables consumers to enjoy browsing speeds and low latency comparable to fiber optics, and access next-generation connected applications and experiences over 5G wireless connections, including cloud and edge computing, high-speed responsive multiplayer gaming, rich entertainment, immersive 360-degree video, and instant applications.
