In today’s smartphones, as the screen is getting bigger and bigger, the power consumption is also getting more and more. And with the arrival of 5G now, smartphone power loss too fast can be a pain point. Although the major cell phone manufacturers are constantly increasing the power of cell phone chargers and battery capacity but did not solve the problem of power consumption from the source.

A few days ago, Samsung Display announced in its official microblogging, its new low-power OLED launch, and the successful commercialization of new organic materials. Compared with the previous generation of OLED, it not only significantly improve the luminous efficiency but also greatly reduced power consumption by more than 16 percent.

Samsung said, OLED through organic light-emitting materials to express color. In the absence of a backlight, the organic material can be energized to emit light. Therefore, the luminous efficiency of organic materials can greatly affect the color gamut of the display, brightness, HDR, outdoor visibility, and power consumption.

The cell phone screen is one of the key factors affecting the life of the phone, so it is critical to reducing power consumption by reducing the display. By developing new organic material, the speed of electron movement in the organic material layer is increased, thus greatly improving the luminous efficiency.

Compared with conventional OLEDs, the new low-power OLEDs can significantly improve light-emitting efficiency and reduce power consumption by more than 16% when used in smartphones. The new OLED has been commercially available and was first equipped on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

In short, Samsung’s new OLED not only consumes less energy but also delivers brighter light. In the 5G era, this will greatly improve the range of smartphones from the source. It is reported that in the past three years, Samsung Display has applied for more than 370 patents related to OLED organic materials in China, the USA, Korea, Japan, and Europe every year. By 2020, Samsung Display will have about 5000 patents in total.
