MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100
This afternoon, MediaTek announced its new generation of 5G flagship SoCs, the Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100, based on TSMC’s 6nm process, with the latest A78 architecture for the CPU and the G77 architecture for the GPU. What are the similarities and differences between the two chips, considering they will soon be used in several mid-to-high-end smartphones?
In terms of similarities, both MediaTek Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 are based on TSMC’s 6nm process and support LPDDR4X, 2133Mhz memory, UFS 3.1 dual-channel flash memory, 4K 60FPS 10bit video recording, AV1 decoding, Wi-Fi 6, L1+L5 dual-band positioning, Sub 6GHz 5G band + dual 5G standby, etc.
Speaking of differences, the Dimensity 1200 makes further performance releases in CPU, GPU, ISP, and APU, including a large core frequency of up to 3.0GHz and tri-cluster architecture, higher Mali-G77 MC9 performance, support for up to a single 200MP camera, 12.5% more performance in the AI unit, and support for 168Hz refresh rate 1080P resolution display, etc.
- Specifically, in terms of specifications, the Dimensity 1100 uses four 2.6GHz A78 chips with four 2.0GHz A55 chips, while the Dimensity 1200 raises the frequency of one of the A78 cores to 3.0GHz as a mega-core.
- The GPU is Mali-G77 MC9, but the main frequency of Dimensity 1200 is a bit higher.
- For the ISP part, the Dimensity 1100 supports up to 32MP + 16MP dual camera and up to 1.08 to pixel camera, while the Dimensity 1200 further supports up to 200MP.
- As for the screen, the Dimensity 1100 supports up to 90Hz QHD screen and 144Hz FHD screen, while the Dimensity 1200 supports up to 90Hz QHD screen and 168Hz FHD screen.
In terms of AI, the MediaTek APU 3.0 is equipped with the MediaTek independent AI processor, combined with AI multi-tasking mechanism, through the AI noise reduction, AI exposure, AI object tracking, and other AI technology is highly integrated to bring users “rapid night shooting” and “super panoramic Night shot” and other new photo experience.
The AI multi-person real-time segmentation technology also enables multi-person background replacement, multi-passenger removal, and other mobile video shooting effects, bringing more excitement to the creation of a 4K resolution video.
Also, the Dimensity 1200 supports the leading chip-level single-frame progressive 4K HDR video technology (Staggered HDR), which performs 3 times exposure fusion processing on each frame when users record 4K video, giving the video image quality an outstanding dynamic range and significant improvements in color, contrast, and detail.
At the same time, combined with the HDR10+ video encoding technology of the Dimensity 1200, the complete output of Staggered HDR video effects, to bring users a more stunning end-to-end cross-screen HDR experience. Besides, the Skyguard 1200 also supports AI multiplayer bokeh, multi-depth-of-field intelligent focus, AI streaming image quality enhancement, and other AI video technologies bringing more innovative possibilities for vlog creation and live streaming, as well as adding support for AV1 video format.
In terms of network, the Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 still supports independent (SA) and non-independent (NSA) networking modes, 5G dual-carrier aggregation (2CC CA), dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), MediaTek 5G UltraSave power-saving technology, and dual SIM 5G standby and dual SIM VoNR voice services under 5G SA/NSA dual-mode networking.
For gaming, the Dimensity 1200 is equipped with the newly upgraded MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 gaming optimization engine, which is claimed to bring industry-leading innovations in four core features: network optimization engine, control optimization engine, intelligent load regulation engine, and image quality optimization engine.
Under the 5G network connection, it can realize the game call dual card parallel, users can play hand games on the primary card while receiving calls from the secondary card, and the game is continuously connected. The Super Hotspot and High-Speed Gaming modes are networks optimized for different gaming environments, effectively reducing gaming network latency and lag.
It is worth mentioning that the Dimensity 1200 is the first to support the upcoming Bluetooth LE Audio, which can be expanded to dual-channel streaming audio with lower latency and longer battery life compared to traditional TWS true wireless Bluetooth headsets.
In terms of specifications, the Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 is undoubtedly the flagship level, compared to the already released Exynos 1080 and Snapdragon 870, and does not fall behind, so that this level of the chip market appears more choices.
The future equipped with the Dimensity 1100 and 1200 manufacturers including Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, realme, etc., the relevant devices will be listed in this year. At the conference, Lu Weibing, vice president of Xiaomi Group and general manager of the Redmi brand, was invited to the conference to announce that Redmi will debut MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 and launch its first flagship gaming phone in 2021 by making a push in the gaming field.
