HarmonyOS is not a copy of Android

In a keynote speech at the “2020 Tech Awards” event hosted by Sina on January 12, Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei’s Consumer BG Software Division, said that the emergence of HarmonyOS is not an alternative system made in response to U.S. sanctions. Hongmeng OS is not a copy of Android or iOS, it is truly a panoramic operating system for the future IoT era.

“There may be speculation that Huawei has developed this system of HarmonyOS because of the U.S. sanctions, and I tell you that this is not the case.” Said Wang Chenglu, President of Huawei Consumer Business Software Department.

Wang Chenglu said, this system project development is in May 2016, at that time Huawei is thinking about the future development of the smartphone industry, it will one day reach the top. Once the development of smartphones has reached the top, what should the industry do in the future? “We kept asking ourselves this question, Huawei is such a big terminal business, we can not put all the roots of the ecological structure in other people’s systems. So, these two questions prompted us to think about what kind of system we want to do in the future, and this is the core initial background of the birth of HarmonyOS.”

He revealed that Huawei’s goal is to have a conservative estimate of 200 million units installed on Huawei’s own devices in 2021 and hopes to exceed 200 million units or well over 200 million units. More importantly, it is open to third-party devices, and the current communication between Huawei and its third-party partners shows that the conservative installed base will reach 100 million units.

This operating system is different from Android and iOS which are only based on cell phones today. When the real IoT comes in the future, such a system is needed to fully connect the bottom layer, and HarmonyOS has taken the first step, which is a very important first step.” Wang Chenglu said.

As you can see, the hardware carrier, HarmonyOS can cover cell phones, TVs, watches, cars, smart homes, and many other devices, while iOS and Android are cell phones. The advantages of HarmonyOS are smooth, open-source, distributed capability, and huge growth space potential because it is born for IoT devices.

In contrast, iOS is smooth but closed, while Android is open but the persistent problems of fragmentation and lagging have not been cured, and due to the limitations of the devices, the future growth space is not as large as HarmonyOS. For developers, HarmonyOS can develop multiple adaptations at once, while iOS and Android need to be adapted separately.
