Despite all the difficulties, Huawei Mate 40 series phones were released as scheduled and debuted with Kirin 9000 chip, the world’s first 5nm 5G SoC. The Kirin 9000E was launched at the same time as the Kirin 9000, which mainly has a reduced number of GPU and NPU cores, and the same CPU, modem processor, and ISP.

Due to the US ban, TSMC can no longer produce chips for Huawei after September 15 last year. Therefore, there has been a lot of attention to the stocking of Kirin 9000 before its release. Some sources said that the order quantity of Kirin 9000 was 15 million, but due to time and capacity constraints, about 8.8 million chips were finally cut out, which is only more than half of the order quantity.

The most recent news revealed that Huawei is working on 3nm Kirin 9010 SoC. Huawei Kirin 9010 uses TSMC 3nm process. According to the current progress of TSMC and Samsung, the fastest 3nm will be 2022, does this mean that the pace of iteration of Kirin 9000 series chips will be updated to 2 to 3 years.

The newest version of Kirin 9010 is being developed with a 3nm process, but some users still left comments saying that they are fans of Kirin chips and that they don’t want to stop here, and are looking forward to the update.

Compared to the 5nm node, TSMC’s 3nm node is expected to improve performance by 10-15%, reduce power consumption by 25-30%, and increase density by 70%. The process node continues to use FinFET architecture, with a 20% increase in SRAM density and a 10% increase in analog density.
