Apple A14 Compared with Snapdragon 888 Performance

Yesterday, Qualcomm has released the benchmark test run scores of the Snapdragon 888 SoC to be used in 2021 Android flagship phones, but the results show that it can not be compared with the A14 chip in the iPhone 12/Pro models, or even with the results show that the Snapdragon 888 SoC is not comparable to the A14 chip in the iPhone 12/Pro, or even the A13 in the iPhone 11/Pro.

According to the test results sent by foreign media Anandtech, the actual performance of Snapdragon 888 is still a certain gap from A14, and even some scenarios are not as good as the performance of A13.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro A14 Compared with Snapdragon 888 Performance by AnandTech with those of Apple iOS devices, and the iPhone models won the Geekbench 5 and GFXBench tests. Snapdragon 888 chip scored 1135 single-core and 3794 multi-core points, while the iPhone 12 Pro with the A14 chip scored 1603 single-core and 4187 multi-core points.

In the GFXBench test, which measures GPU performance, the Snapdragon 888 model scored 86 points (in frames per second), compared to 102.24 for the iPhone 12 Pro. Sustained performance is unknown at this point and will depend on the power consumption of the chip, but AnandTech believes that the Snapdragon 888 model could eventually beat the iPhone if it is competitive in terms of power consumption.

While the Snapdragon 888 doesn’t appear to match the peak performance scores of the A13 or A14 SoCs used in Apple’s iPhone, sustained performance will depend quite a bit on the chip’s power consumption. If that falls between 4W and 4.5W, then most Android flagship phones in 2021 will likely maintain that peak performance figure, allowing Qualcomm to reclaim the mobile performance crown from Apple.

But if the chip throttles back significantly, then Snapdragon 888 could fall short of reclaiming the crown. But even then, it shouldn’t matter too much to Android users: the generation gap will still be huge compared to phones in 2020, and this is one of the biggest GPU performance leaps Qualcomm has been able to achieve so far.

The Snapdragon 888 chip is not as good as the A13 and A14, but it’s a big improvement over the previous generation Snapdragon 865 currently used in Android flagship smartphones. This includes a 25 percent increase in CPU performance and a 35 percent increase in GPU performance.

AnandTech says that since these benchmarks were provided by Qualcomm and not obtained independently, give Qualcomm the benefit of the doubt that its numbers are accurate, and we hope they are accurate and will be reproduced in commercial devices.
