OmniVision, the world’s third-largest mobile phone image sensor company, has announced the launch of the OmniVision OV64A image sensor. It is said to be the world’s first large optical format 1.0-micron 64-megapixel image sensor, further enhancing the low-light performance of mobile phones and supporting up to 30 frames per second 8K video.

The sensor is said to offer a 64-megapixel resolution, the largest in its class with 1.0-micron pixels and a class-leading 1/1.34 inch, providing excellent low-light performance for both wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle main cameras in the phone. Besides, the OV64A features triple exposure, 4-in-1 HDR, on-chip combo and tone mapping, and a very high frame rate, all of which work together to eliminate motion artifacts and produce an excellent 64-megapixel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

The sensor also offers staggered HDR timing options for secondary and tertiary exposures, giving smartphone designers the flexibility to select an excellent HDR method for a given scene.

“TSR estimates that by 2021, the smartphone market will have demand for approximately 322 million high-performance image sensors of 50 megapixels or higher resolution, presenting a good opportunity for OmniVision Technologies’ growing 64-megapixel portfolio,” Arun Jayaseelan, Product Manager, Howell Technologies, said, “The OV64A’s 1.0-micron pixel size improves sensitivity by more than 60 percent compared to our 0.8 microns 64-megapixel image sensor, resulting in superior performance in low light conditions.

The OV64A is said to feature OmniVision Technologies’ PureCel Plus-S chip stacking technology, an integrated on-chip 4-in-1 color filter array, and hardware pixel reduction algorithms for 64-megapixel Bayer output or 8K video. In low light conditions, this sensor supports pixel 4-in-1, outputs 16-megapixel images, and achieves 2.0-micron equivalent performance.

Output formats of the OV64A include 64 megapixels (15 frames per second), 16 megapixels (60 frames per second with 4-in-1 pixel merging), and 4K/2K video (120 frames per second with additional pixels required for electronic image stabilization). The sensor also supports 8K video at 30 fps, 1080p video at 240 fps, and 720p video at 480 fps. Other features include CPHY and DPHY interfaces, as well as four-in-half shielded phase-detection for fast autofocus.
