The A14, built on TSMC’s 5nm process, has already been released, and mass production will begin next, with TSMC’s related production capacity reportedly at full capacity and even an A14X scheduled to begin.

As we all know, the most advanced process for mass production of semiconductors is 5nm, which has a 15% performance increase and a 30% power reduction compared to 7nm. Aside from TSMC, Samsung is also working on a 5nm Snapdragon 875, so what’s the price of a 5nm foundry compared to a 7nm one?

Yesterday, semiconductor industry insider Chiakokhua in the latest blog roughly calculated TSMC 5nm foundry price, to a similar NVIDIA P100 scale chip as a reference, calculating the wafer and chip sales price of TSMC process nodes. It is understood that the foundry sales price of 5nm wafers is about $16,988, compared to $9,346 at 7nm, an increase of more than 80%.

TSMC 5nm Foundry Price

TSMC 5nm foundry price is more expensive than the 7nm, and next year’s flagship standard configuration. However, this is because the advanced process of transistor density increases, can cut out more chips naturally, so if the conversion of a single chip foundry price, 5nm for $238 U.S. dollars, than the 7nm $233 U.S. dollars expensive 5 dollars.

There are expensive reasons, the 5nm wafer process is more complex, EUV up to 14 layers, each layer to use ASML’s Twinscan NXE lithography machine, and the unit price of this equipment over $120 million. And it should be remembered that this is the early days of 5nm mass production, as yields improve later prices will also be lowered.

As of now, the known and mass production using the 5nm process is A14, Kirin 9000, Snapdragon 875, and MediaTek is also reportedly arranging for it to be standard on almost all flagship phones next year.
