Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 Introduction
Mobile phone fast-charging feature with no return, from last year to now many manufacturers have promoted 65W fast-charging technology, more than 100W or even 120W fast-charging technology has also been released. Now Qualcomm has also joined the super-fast charging camp and announced the launch of Quick Charge 5 (QC 5).
Qualcomm Quick Charge 5, Qualcomm claims that this new standard will charge a 4500mAh battery from 0 to 50 percent in 5 minutes and to 100 percent in 15 minutes. Qualcomm says QC 5 will be available for Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 865+, and future high-end chipsets, and that the standard supports chargers rated up to 100W.
Qualcomm says the new solution is four times faster and 10 degrees cooler than its predecessor. In its demo device, Qualcomm used two batteries to drive the voltage up and charged them in series.
Besides, QC 5.0 fast charging also supports dual/triple charge technology, adaptive input voltage, the 4th generation Intelligent Negotiation of Optimal Voltage (INOV4) algorithm, Qualcomm Battery Saver battery health management, and the new Qualcomm adapter power intelligence recognition technology, which not only improves charging efficiency but also enhances safety and extends the time it takes to charge a smartphone.
In terms of compatibility, QC 5.0 is backward compatible with QC 2.0/3.0/4.0 needless to say, and also takes full advantage of USB PD and USB-C technology, compatible with USB industry standards.
To pair with QC 5.0 fast charging, Qualcomm has also introduced a new generation of power management chips, Qualcomm SMB1396, and Qualcomm SMB1398. by supporting 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, dual-channel wired and wireless charging, an adaptive operation based on power input (3 levels Buck and DIV/2) As well as being scalable (using a master-slave architecture to provide higher power), the two chips are designed to achieve the highest charging efficiency of over 98%.
Not only that, but they also support input voltage operating modes above 20V to accommodate the highest power of wireless and wired charging inputs. The two chips are now available and starting to ship.
Qualcomm says that QC 5.0 fast charging is sampling out to customers and is expected to be available with commercial devices in the third quarter of 2020, with support for platforms including the Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 865 Plus, and future top and high-end Snapdragon mobile platforms – a strong hint that the Snapdragon 875 is now, and is expected to be the new flagship next year.
Several handset makers have recently announced new fast-charging technologies, but they’re either in the concept stage or will be limited to a few phones from that brand (Private Protocol). Earlier this month, OPPO introduced 125W SuperVOOC charging technology, Vivo announced a 120W fast-charging solution, Xiaomi’s 120W charger has been certified in China, and Qualcomm’s new charging solution will hopefully reach more users.
Note: Based on internal testing, the 4500 mAh fast-charging battery (1.5C charge multiplier) was charged at maximum power at a 40-degree temperature limit for all charging tests. Charge time is based on charging from 0 to 50% of battery capacity.
