Tonight Epic unveiled Unreal Engine 5 and said it will release a preview version early in 2021. Officials have now released a video called “Lumen in the Land of Nanite”, a live demo of the PlayStation 5 running in real-time.

Officially, Nanite Virtual Micro-Polygon Geometry allows artists to create all the geometric detail that the human eye can see, and the advent of Nanite Virtual Geometry means that film-quality artwork consisting of hundreds of millions of polygons can be imported directly into the Unreal Engine – whether it’s sculptured from Zbrush or CAD data scanned using photogrammetry – and Nanite Geometry can be streamed and scaled in real-time, so there’s no need to budget for the number of polygons, polygon memory or the number of draws, or to bake details into a normal map or manually edit the LOD, without any loss of picture quality.

Lumen is a fully dynamic global lighting solution that responds to scenes and lighting changes in real-time, without the need for dedicated light tracking hardware. The system renders indirect mirrored reflections and diffuse reflections that bounce off infinitely in large and detailed scenes; Lumen can handle anything from millimeters to kilometers. The system will adjust the indirect lighting according to the situation, and Lumen will save the artist a lot of time by not having to wait for the lightmapping to bake or edit the UV.

Unreal Engine 4 and 5’s go-live schedule Unreal Engine 4.25 already supports Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation hosting platforms. Epic is currently working closely with host manufacturers, multiple game developers, and publishers to develop next-generation games using Unreal Engine 4. Unreal Engine 5 will release a preview version early in 2021, and a full version later in 2021. It will support next-generation hosts, current generation hosts, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms. Officially, forward-compatible features are being designed so that everyone can start next-generation development in UE4 first, and migrate projects to UE5 at the right time.

Unreal Engine 5 Introduction

EPIC also said that the game will be migrated to Unreal Engine 5 in 2021 after the next-generation console is released and that the game will be available for free download and development using the Unreal engine. But from today, the split threshold is raised to when the game’s total revenue reaches $1 million for the first time. The new Unreal Engine licensing terms will give game developers far more generous treatment than the licensing models for other engines and are retroactive to January 1, 2020.
