Samsung 600 Megapixel Camera Sensor To Break Human Eye Limit – Samsung

Samsung 600 Megapixel Camera Sensor

Following the release of the world’s first 108 megapixel mobile phone sensor, head of Samsung’s sensor business team and executive vice president Yongin Park wrote today that Samsung’s goal is to develop 600 Megapixel sensor (600MP), breaking the limit of human eyes (about 500 million pixels).

Yongin said that our eyes can distinguish about 500 megapixel of resolution, compared with the current 40 megapixel’s resolution of most SLR cameras, and 12 megapixels of flagship smartphones, we want to match human perception ability still has a long way to go.

If you simply stitch as many pixels into the sensor as possible, it seems easy, but it will make the image sensor huge and occupy the entire device area. In order to accommodate millions of pixels in today’s smartphones, the pixels are inevitably reduced to make the sensor as compact as possible. And because the area of each pixel receiving light information is reduced, the image will be blurred or dim. The number of pixels and the size of the sensor need to be balanced, which requires solid technical capabilities.

According to Yongin, most cameras can only take photos with a wavelength of 450 to 750 nanometers (nm) visible to the human eye. Sensors capable of detecting light wavelengths outside this range are very rare, but their applications can benefit in a wide range of fields.

For example, an image sensor equipped with ultraviolet light sensing can capture pictures to show the different colors of healthy cells and cancer cells to diagnose skin cancer. Infrared image sensors can also be used for quality control in agriculture and other industries. In the future, we may even have sensors that can see microbes that are invisible to the naked eye.

Yongin said that Samsung is not only developing image sensors, but also researching other types of sensors that can record odor or taste. Even sensors that transcend human senses will soon become an indispensable part of our daily lives. We are excited about the potential of this sensor because it can make invisible things clearly visible, and by transcending our own sensory ability to help people.

Yongin said that so far, the main application area of image sensors has been the field of smartphones, but it is expected to soon expand to other rapidly emerging areas, such as autonomous vehicles, Internet of Things, and drones. Samsung is honored to lead the trend of small pixels and high-resolution sensors.

This trend will continue until 2020 and beyond. Samsung will meet the diversified needs of equipment manufacturers with a comprehensive product portfolio and prepare for the next wave of technology. The wave of innovation. Through unremitting innovation, we are determined to open up unlimited possibilities in pixel technology, and it is even possible to provide image sensors that are finer than the human eye.

Although the article does not introduce too much about the sensor, in theory, the size of a single pixel should be very small, Samsung must use multi-pixel synthesis technology to achieve a true outsole and improve imaging quality.

However, there is also news that the size of the 600 million pixel sensor may be relatively large, and it may be missed from the mobile phone for a while, and may face other fields.

Although Samsung 600 megapixel sensor are still far away from us, Samsung is said to be working on 150 megapixel sensors, which may be visible in a short time.
